OUR LEGACY COLLECTION
We are proud to present a visual journey through the enduring legacy of the North Jersey Alumnae Chapter (NJAC) — a story told through images that honor our sisterhood, our scholarship, our service, our social action, and our steadfast commitment to servicing Essex, Hudson and Union counties since our chartering in 1939.
Each photograph is a moment in time, a testament to the women who came before us and the generations who continue to carry the torch. Together, these images form a living archive of our triumphs, our traditions, and our impact across our service areas.
As you explore our Chapter Legacy, we invite you to witness not only the milestones we’ve reached, but the spirit that has shaped us — the joy, the leadership, the resilience, and the unwavering dedication that define who we are. This collection is only the beginning of our herstory, preserved with pride and shared with purpose to inspire the future of our chapter’s legacy and the communities we serve.
SORORITY HISTORY
DELTA SIGMA
THETA SORORITY,
INCORPORATED
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (DST) was founded in 1913 on the campus of Howard University by 22 collegiate women who envisioned an organization committed to promoting academic excellence and providing assistance to those in need.
Our 22 Founders envisioned a sisterhood grounded in academic excellence, impactful public service, and social activism, a vision that ultimately shaped the Five-Point Programmatic Thrust which unified the major programming of the sorority [economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement].
Our sorority spans the globe with over 1,000 chartered chapters across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America & the Caribbean Islands and more than 350,000 initiated members who bond together through sisterhood, scholarship, service, and social action.

CHAPTER HISTORY
KAPPA SIGMA
CHAPTER
– NOW
NORTH JERSEY
ALUMNAE
CHAPTER
Kappa Sigma Chapter (now NJAC), was chartered in 1939 and was the first chapter in New Jersey. Kappa Sigma was a catalyst for the development of one of the first Black Girl Scout units in northern New Jersey and playered a significant role in the formation of the first undergraduate chapter in New Jersey, Delta Zeta, at Kean University. Led by our 14 chapter members, Kappa Sigma Chapter leaned into organizing and moving toward full civil rights, soon adopting, "The right to learn and the right to an education" as its creed.
Kappa Sigma Chapter was the trailblazer for many chapters chartered in New Jersey, most notably Delta Zeta (1950) at Kean University, the first undergraduate chapter in the state and in 1956, Kappa Sigma was renamed North Jersey Alumnae Chapter.
Today there are more than 350 initiated members of North Jersey Alumnae Chapter proudly serving Essex, Hudson and Union counties and continue to push its programs forward to elevate the community.
