NJAC STEP TEAMS

This collage highlights the dynamic presence of the North Jersey Alumnae Chapter’s Step Teams, proudly represented by teams such as the present-day InfraRED Divas, whose artistry and precision continue Delta Sigma Theta’s powerful legacy of stepping. Rooted in African diasporic traditions—drawing from rhythmic storytelling, call-and-response, and community bonding—stepping has long held deep cultural significance within Black Greek-letter organizations and the broader Black community. It is both an art form and a historical expression of unity, discipline, and resistance, passed from one generation to the next. In the 90's, the NJAC step team won at the National Convention step competition.
The images capture NJAC members practicing in unison, performing on prestigious stages like the US Open (2024), and celebrating their achievements through awards and community recognition. In 1993 (Rutherford, NJ) and 1995 (Buffalo, NY), NJAC won the Eastern Region Conference, and in 1996 NJAC won the National Convention Championship in Orlando, FL. Yet, their impact extends far beyond the stage. NJAC’s step teams preserve an important cultural tradition while using performance to mentor youth, build confidence, uplift communities, and amplify the Sorority’s mission. Through showcases, competitions, and community events, they help carry forward a rhythmic history that honors ancestors, strengthens sisterhood, and inspires pride across generations. The NJAC step teams remain vibrant symbols of excellence, creativity, and cultural continuity—embodying both Delta’s heritage and the enduring power of stepping in the community.
