1939 – NORTH JERSEY ALUMNAE CHAPTER CHARTER

The Charter of the North Jersey Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated—first established under the name Kappa Sigma Chapter—marks a defining moment in the growth of Delta’s presence in northern New Jersey. At the time of its formation, the region’s rapidly expanding African American communities sought greater access to organized support, advocacy, and service-based leadership. The Charter answered that call, creating a formal structure through which Delta women could advance scholarship, uplift families, and address pressing social issues with purpose and unity.

The establishment of Kappa Sigma Chapter represented more than a procedural milestone; it embodied the collective determination of the Charter Members who envisioned a chapter built on the principles of sisterhood, public service, and community transformation. The Charter provided the framework for program development, leadership cultivation, and strategic outreach across multiple counties in northern New Jersey, allowing the chapter to respond to local needs while remaining rooted in the national goals and traditions of Delta Sigma Theta. Early initiatives supported youth education, civic engagement, and social justice advocacy—work that would become hallmarks of the chapter’s identity.

As Delta Sigma Theta transitioned toward geographically named alumnae chapters, Kappa Sigma evolved into what is known today as the North Jersey Alumnae Chapter (NJAC). This shift reflected the chapter’s growing influence and expanding footprint while honoring its foundational purpose. Although the name changed, the significance of the Charter remains steadfast: it is the cornerstone of NJAC’s enduring legacy. The chapter later shifted its service area focus to Essex, Hudson and Union counties as more alumnae chapters were chartered and supported other surrounding counties. Through decades of service, leadership, and community partnership, the chapter continues to uphold the spirit of its Charter, ensuring that the vision of its founders remains alive in every project, initiative, and sisterly bond.
