1939 – NJAC – THE FIRST DST CHAPTER IN NEW JERSEY

The establishment of Kappa Sigma Chaptermarked a historic milestone as it became the first Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated chapter in the state of New Jersey. This moment signaled the beginning of Delta’s formal presence in the region and reflected the determination of visionary sorors who recognized the need for organized service, sisterhood, and leadership within New Jersey’s African American communities. With its charter, Kappa Sigma laid the groundwork for a legacy of meaningful engagement, opening the door for structured programs addressing education, civic participation, health, and economic empowerment.
As the Sorority expanded nationally, the founding of Kappa Sigma represented Delta’s commitment to uplifting communities beyond traditional urban centers and into emerging areas of influence. Through its trailblazing role, the chapter set a precedent for excellence by organizing impactful initiatives and cultivating leaders who would continue to elevate Delta’s mission across the state. The chapter’s creation not only introduced Delta Sigma Theta’s ideals to New Jersey but also inspired future generations of sorors to deepen their involvement, broaden their service reach, and uphold the Sorority’s standards with pride. Kappa Sigma’s pioneering presence stands as a foundational chapter in the state’s history, ultimately shaping the evolution of what would become the North Jersey Alumnae Chapter (NJAC) and solidifying Delta’s enduring footprint in New Jersey.
