DELTA ZETA – THE FIRST UNDERGRADUATE CHAPTER IN NEW JERSEY

This historic photograph captures a defining moment in Delta Sigma Theta history, as a distinguished national leader and the Sorority’s 10th National President greets the original seven charter members of the Delta Zeta Chapter, the first undergraduate chapter chartered in the state of New Jersey. With grace and pride, the national leader extends her hand to the newly initiated young women, symbolizing the passing of Delta’s legacy, values, and vision to the next generation. Kappa Sigma's charter allowed them to grow, thrive and carry out the Sorority's mission. Today, Delta Zeta serves as the undergraduate chapter for Kean University, NJIT & Rutgers in Newark.

The event reflects not only the accomplishments of the Delta Zeta charter members but also the essential role of the North Jersey Alumnae Chapter (NJAC), whose advocacy and support helped bring this milestone to fruition. The photograph embodies the spirit of scholarship, sisterhood, leadership, and social action that defines Delta Sigma Theta. The formal attire, corsages, and poised expressions speak to the significance of the moment — a celebration of new beginnings, guided mentorship, and the expansion of Delta’s presence across New Jersey.

Today, this image stands as a treasured reminder of the collaborative strength, intergenerational connection, and unwavering commitment that continue to shape the Sorority’s impact locally and nationally.
